Pokémon Research Exhibition: Where Aspiring Pokémon Trainers Turn Into Scientific Researchers
Join Professor Pikachu in his research laboratory and go on a mission to discover hundreds of Pokémon species at the Pokémon Research Exhibition. It’s time to don your lab coats because – you know – gotta catch ‘em all!
Just in case you needed yet another reason to head to Resorts World Sentosa’s magnificent marine life park, S.E.A. Aquarium is hosting the first-ever Pokémon Research Exhibition outside Japan.
The interactive exhibition opens its doors on Saturday, 22 October 2016, and runs till 2 January, 2017. Here’s a sneak peek into the 1000-square-metre research laboratory and what to expect.

Pick Your PokéBall
As the lab-coated head scientist explained, all Pokémon trainer hopefuls begin by choosing a PokéBall at the entrance of the laboratory. You have the choice of three levels of difficulty – the red PokéBall puts you on the Regular Course, the blue Great Ball lets you try the Difficult Course, and if you are an absolute expert, go for the Extra Difficult Course with the black Ultra Ball. Each PokéBall comes with an Observation Notebook, which you will need to jot down notes as you collect data along the way.
Do note that you can only pick one PokéBall during your visit, so choose wisely! If you think you’ve levelled up and wish to attempt a higher level of difficulty, extra lab fees are payable for each opportunity.
In case you need extra guidance, look to the series of signboards on the opposite wall to the PokéBall dispensers. They explain what you’re supposed to do. In addition, friendly lab technicians are on hand to answer your questions.
Get to Work
Now that you have your choice of PokéBall in hand, here’s your mission: to deduce which Pokémon it holds. The idea is to learn more about species classification by carrying out the scientific processes of observation, investigation and data collection – just like real scientists!
When you enter the main hall of the laboratory, you’ll see eight different sets of observation machines. When you place the PokéBall into the machines, they will generate clues about each Pokémon’s characteristics.
These can range from its silhouette to its weight, and even the sound of its cry! Using all the collected evidence, you can then attempt to guess which Pokémon species you hold within the PokéBall in your hand.
But there’s a catch – you can only use four of the eight machines for your research. This means that you have to choose wisely once again. Here’s a tip: look at all eight stations before deciding on which you think will give you the most useful clues.
Furthermore, each observation machine requires you to perform different actions before it will produce the data you require. We don’t want to give it all away, but these go from actions that take simple hand-eye coordination, to others which require actual physical exertion.
Identify Your Pokémon
Once you have obtained all four clues, it’s time to make your educated guess. If you can’t figure it out, try taking a look at the larger-than-life Pokédex wall. Peer at the photos of more than 700 Pokémon species and see which fits the evidence you’ve collected.
Now to find out if your guess was accurate. Head to one of the Answer Checkers located by the exit of the laboratory. This will tell you which Pokémon is actually inside your PokéBall, its statistics and some interesting trivia about it.
Don’t worry if you didn’t guess the correct Pokémon, there are no penalties. After all, scientific research is a learning experience, right? If you did guess right, pat yourself on the back and why not return to the starting point to get yourself a Great Ball or Ultra Ball this time!

Let’s face it, we may not all be budding scientists, but who can resist everyone’s favourite yellow Pokémon? Especially when he bounces up to you in his huge – I mean, full – glory, dressed in a white lab coat! Not convinced? Check out this video we took:
Yup, Professor Pikachu and friends make an appearance at 11.30am and 5.30pm at the Pokémon Research Exhibition daily, so make sure you hang around to say hi and give him a big hug. Even if you aren’t visiting the exhibition, drop by the B1 entrance atrium at 2.30pm daily for your dose of kawaii.
There are plenty of other photo ops to be had in and around the exhibition, such as adorable inflatable Pokémon characters that hang out by the Pokédex wall.
You can’t miss Giratina, the mascot of Pokémon Platinum. Isn’t it cool looking? Of course, there’s also a giant inflatable Pikachu that you’ll discover near the exit of the exhibition.
Given the worldwide popularity of the Pokémon Go game, it’s probably safe to say that this exhibition isn’t just for children. In fact, the younger ones will probably need some adult guidance to help them along. We would say that Pokémon fans aged seven to 70 will appreciate the research mission – definitely one for the whole family.
Tickets to the Pokémon Research Exhibition are bundled with admission to S.E.A. Aquarium, so don’t forget to go say hi to the other marine residents while you’re there!
