Halloween Haunts 2016: The 15 Best Places to Bring Your Tricks and Get Your Treats
From hair-raising adventures with pirates and zombies to hands-on workshops where kids can make their own Halloween treats, here are some fun places for the little ones this Halloween season.
Halloween is celebrated on the evening of 31 October each year. Originally called All Hallows’ Eve, it is the night before All Saints’ Day. The name was later shortened to the snappier Halloween. Going further back, however, it is thought to have originated with Samhain, an ancient Celtic festival when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts. It’s basically the Western version of the Chinese Seventh Month Festival or Hungry Ghost Month!

Today, in countries like the US, Halloween is a fun festival for the young and the young-at-heart to dress up in costume and go house-to-house. “Trick o’ treat!” the kids would greet each person who came to the door, as they held out a bag to collect candy. A stingy neighbour who didn’t prepare any goodies would get a mischievous ‘trick’ played on them instead.
While that custom hasn’t quite caught on here in Singapore, more and more tourist attractions and other child-friendly venues are coming up with their own Halloween events each year. We round up 15 of the best for some trick o’ treating fun this year.
Hair-Raising Adventures
1. Spooky Seas at S.E.A. Aquarium
Ahoy, matey! Enter the pirates’ lair at S.E.A. Aquarium and let Captain Spooks guide the little ones through the trick or treat trail. They will discover fun and educational adventures, and treasure, of course! Over at Ocean Dome, Gypsy will regale little explorers with captivating tales about her adventures on the seven. On weekends, be transported into the underwater world at Open Ocean Habitat as Skeleton Wanderers seek out Sea Fairies in the depths of the ocean. Dress up as your favourite character and catch S.E.A. Aquarium’s manta mascot Mai or the skeleton divers for spooky photo souvenirs. Kids can also make their own Halloween-themed crafts at the Ocean Gallery. It’s going to be a swashbuckling time!

2. Safari Boo at River Safari
Touted as Singapore’s first merry-not-scary Halloween event for kids, Safari Boo returns with the theme of Aliens and Monsters. Dress according to the theme as a family and participate in the Boo-tiful Family Pageant and stand to win prizes. In an all-new interactive show, kids join forces with monsters, aliens and their animal friends against the evil Doctor V. Then be mesmerised by mythical mermaids swimming in a choreographed performance alongside real life mermaids, otherwise known as manatees! Kids also get to solve mysteries of real-life aliens – invasive animal species – that do not belong, do face painting and other craft activities. Then get your pictures taken with alien characters and their giant crashed spaceship!

3. Thriller in the Park at The Singapore Halloween Festival 2016
The inaugural edition of Singapore’s own Halloween festival event promises to wow the whole family. Get the best timing as you challenge Singapore’s first zombie maze, and be wowed by the amazing costumes in the Cosplay Thriller competition. There’s a dedicated Kids Zone with shows just for the little ones, and a giant picnic lawn for everyone to enjoy the food and drinks from unique F&B pop-ups. With a carnival atmosphere set in Fort Canning Park, elaborate stages featuring top local acts and DJs will keep you entertained you for 12 hours straight. Best of all, kids under 12 years enter free!

4. The Not So Creepy Halloween at Science Centre Singapore
Go on a top secret mission this Halloween. Science Centre Singapore is recruiting undercover agents to help crack down on invading evil villains. It’s time for the whole family to suit up and assist the Superheroes! You’ll learn and uncover the science behind their evil plot. Then head to Tinkering Studios and Scientist For A Day for more Halloween themed activities. Go dressed in your best costume and participate in an Instagram contest. Upload the coolest photo you can take at the photo booth and post it on Instagram with the hashtag #ScienceCentreSG for a chance to win a Magnetism Kit worth $49.90.

5. Trick or Treat on Ice at The Rink
Imagine ice-skating among monsters in Singapore’s first and only Olympic-size skating rink. And it’s steeped in fog! What’s more, a giant 5m tall witch haunted the rink last year, so you can expect lots of spooky fun. Just purchase tickets to JCube’s Scream Fest 3 – The School Maze (that’s two Halloween adventures in one location!) and you get to ice-skate for two hours for just $7 on weekdays, inclusive of skate boots rental (usual price $17.50). 6. Halloween in the Snow at Snow City Singapore
Go trick o’ treating with a family of snowmen as they go on a Halloween adventure. Get into the spirit of Halloween with the hourly snowfall experience. Even more exciting is the snow blizzard that happens only at 12 and 3pm daily. Come dressed in your favourite costume and enjoy a ghoulish good time in the snow. While you’re at it, get your photo taken with Snow City’s mascots Oki, Ila, Koko, Nooka and Suki who perform a dance showdown at 2.30pm daily. Kids are also invited to Suki’s Nest for a spooky Halloween storytelling session at 12 and 4pm daily. Don’t worry, there’ll be just the right amount of fright for a nightmare-free Halloween!

7. Pirates of the Swiss Club at Swiss Club
Go on a treasure hunting adventure at the Swiss Club this Halloween. Team up as a family to challenge five rival pirates and make them give up their treasures. To do so, you’ll have to solve Captain Hook’s riddles, beat Captain Jack in rock-scissors-paper and play charades with Captain Kidd. Then get Captain Barbossa’s painting right and see if you can beat Captain Silver’s super senses. The team with the most treasures becomes top pirate! 15. Halloween Prom 2016 – Stage for Kids International
