Experience The Arctic at The New Snow City!

I had the opportunity to meet the “Arctic Avengers” yesterday. They comprised Oki, an Eskimo boy, and his animal friends – Nooka the polar bear, Suki the snowy owl, Ila the wolf and Koko the fox. This adorable clan makes up the revamped Snow City’s five new mascots which serve to teach visitors about climate change and reducing one’s carbon footprint, through fun facts within the indoor snow centre. You can meet and greet them at 2.30pm on Wednesdays, weekends and on Christmas day!

The highlight of Snow City’s first major overhaul in fifteen years is a first-of-its-kind snow machine in Asia that is able to produce fine powdery snow. This is complemented by a new snow gun that will provide unforgettable snowfall experiences via a crystallisation process of combining water with high pressure air. Fascinating, isn’t it? The snow is of perfect consistency to make snowballs for a friendly battle in the snow! (tried and tested)

So what else is new at Singapore’s only permanent indoor snow centre?

1. Story Telling Corner

Take part in interactive story-telling sessions about the Arctic which will teach the little ones the science behind the phenomenon that is the Northern Lights. They can also enlighten themselves on what goes on in the life of an Inuit. (that’s the native term for an Eskimo!)

2. Snow Slope

I had a ball of a time sliding down this 60 metre long snow covered slope (below) in a rubber tube! I wish I could do it all over again! Remember to plant yourself firmly in that rubber ring and lift those legs up high in order to have a perfect brake-free slide!

3. Inuit’s Home

Can you imagine living in an environment in which snow is abundant and temperatures are constantly below zero degrees Celsius? That’s exactly why the lives of the Inuits are unique. Here, the kids can play in an Inuit’s home and experience how they obtain their food on a daily basis – through ice-fishing and riding on dog-pulled sleighs!

4. Snow Playground

What’s better than a regular playground? A snow playground (below) of course! Children and adults alike can have the time of their lives slipping and sliding around in the snow playground that is complete with a real-life igloo, snow slides, a snowman, as well as snow sculptures of the Snow City’s new Arctic mascots! Remember to snap some pictures with your favourite one!

5. Giant Suki’s Nest

Suki is the Snow City’s magical resident owl which is active 24 hours a day unlike her regular nocturnal counterparts. She has amazing vision and can light up the path ahead with her eyes! Visitors can interact with this cute owl and have fun at her nest with this spanking new installation!

6. Tree House Adventure

If the snow is getting a tad too cold for you, take a break from it by climbing through the tunnels and sliding down the treehouse in this zone of the all-new Snow City!

The chilly space is also a great way for children of all ages to understand how they can play a part in helping to combat climate change. Our little red dot may be 7,200 kilometres from the Arctic Circle, but phenomena that take place in the Arctic have crucial environmental, industrial and commercial consequences on us as we are a low-lying island and an international seaport. Check out the exhibition outside the Snow City’s reception area to know more!
