15 Ways to Enjoy the September School Holidays
Three quarters of a school year has passed by and now the September holidays are here! Unfortunately we only have seven days to squeeze in all the amazing activities available during this time so we’ve done the research for you and sieved out those that we’d love to go to as well. Here are our picks for the week. Enjoy!

1. Check out Street Arts
When was the last time you screamed and cried with laughter? Be entertained by local and international buskers at the Sentosa Buskers Festival and get a hearty dose of comic therapy as well. Last year’s event saw a variety of performances from different cultures and children in the audiences had opportunities to learn fun circus tricks as well! Please check out the schedule on Sentosa’s website closer to the date so that you can plan your day out an catch as many acts as possible. Don’t forget to show your support by tipping the buskers when they pass their hats around!

2. Move to the Music!
A series of introductory dance classes as part of the da:ns Festival 2014, Footwork has workshops for little ones aged three to six (accompanied by mommy or daddy), as well as parent-and-child classes for little ones aged seven to 10. A Grandparent-&-Kids workshop is available too so kids can bond with gramps or grandma as they both get active. Footwork participants also get special deals of up to 15 per cent off at the Esplanade Mall. See a video of previous Footwork sessions here.

3. Barbecue by the Sea
The Port of Lost Wonder at Sentosa has ‘BBQ Under the Stars’ for families every first Saturday of the month. It’s a magical experience to eat alfresco by a giant pirate ship and this week, on top of the BBQ buffet spread, Pirate Ship water-play and a movie, families can also enjoy lantern making, a light-up and a short trail walk with their lanterns by the beach in celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival. Don’t forget to bring your swimwear if you are planning to get wet! Complimentary for children below five years old.

4. Commune with Nature
The Freshwater Stream and Pond
This investigative biodiversity workshop introduces wildlife in soft mud, under rocks, and among reeds. Your child will also learn about the Common Greenback Frog, the Malayan Box Terrapin, and the damselfly. Children will go home with an art and craft piece, a wildlife sticker and a potted plant. Registration closes on 3 Sep. A guided tour on pond life is available on 13 Sep.

Go to the Supermarket with Sara
The NParks guided tour for kids, ‘Sara Goes to the Supermarket Garden’, will bring your child on a trail to learn facts and stories about banana, peanut, soya bean, sugarcane, sweet potato and many more fruits and vegetables. Suitable for children from K1 to P6, every child will bring home a ‘Sara Goes to the Supermarket Garden’ book. Registration closes on 1 Sep.

The Great Kapok Tree
This is a drama, rhythm and craft cum planting workshop. Children will pick up important values and learn about the importance of plants. They will make make their own rainstick and learn rainforest music. Each child also gets to bring home a potted plant. Suitable for children from K1 to P6. Registration closes on 5 Sep.

HeART for Nature

5. Be A Little Engineer
Whether your child loves anything to do with outer space or prefers to be an everyday hero, these workshops will have your him leaping into action, battling evil, or rescuing lives with Lego robots. And oh, they’ll pick up some computer programming skills as well! The class is 1.5 hours long for five to seven year olds, and two hours for eight to 12 year olds.

6. Party with My Little Pony
Join Princess Twilight Sparkle and her pony friends to celebrate the magic of Friendship! 7. Attend A Free Concert
Students from the St Joseph’s Institution schools showcase their musical talents at their annual concert in the park at the Botanic Gardens. Pack a picnic basket and a mat, then come on down to enjoy classical and contemporary melodies in the park. There will also be balloon sculpting and face painting for children.

8. Learn About Money
Children from six years of age can and go on a journey with a tour guide to learn about the evolution of Singapore’s currency at this Coin-Making Workshop. They will then learn the process of coin-making and get a hands-on experience in making one out of plaster.

Barter Trading Workshop
Children from four to 12 years old will learn the story of how Singapore came to be known as the Lion City and play a fun game of barter trading. Take on the role of a farmer, fisherman, craftsman or spice trader and learn how people traded in the olden days.

The Explorer Workshop

9. Celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival
Moonfest is in its 9th year and as part of the Chinese Arts Festival it showcases Chinese traditional performances, workshops and talks, including Chinese opera, ensemble performances, puppetry, lantern riddles, cross talk, Chinese chess and a lantern walkabout. This is a great way to expose your child to fun Chinese activities outside of school!

Floral Lantern Making
In this art and craft workshop, children will learn to make pressed flowers to decorate their handmade lantern with. They will also get to taste mooncakes made from plant ingredients that can be found in the Gardens. Suitable for children from K1 to P6. Registration closes on 2 Sep.

10. Explore Art
This interactive exhibition titled The Story Tree is for children aged four to nine and it will take them exploring with all five senses. On Saturdays, there is a Crafty Kids activity from 1 to 5pm where children can enjoy performances, embark on a journey across Asia with captivating storytellers, or make their own masterpiece to bring home.

11. Enjoy Food and Art
Big Fun Kitchen and My Art Studio collaborate to conduct one full day camp dedicated to cooking and art. Your child will get to bake the Cookie Monster’s favorite cookie, then make a pizza and have it for lunch. They will also learn about fruit art and paint on canvas using food dye and oil pastels. Suitable for children aged six to 16 years. A discount is offered for two or four children registering together before 31 August.

12. Give Someone a Little Sun
Can you imagine nights without light? Dr Irene Lee, the inventor of portable solar lamps has a team of “light mules” who bring these cute lamps to countries where the children need them to study and to keep them safe. This year-end, they will be going to the Philippines, Myanmar, Peru, Bolivia, Nigeria and Cameroon. You and your child can donate a few and share a teachable moment at the same time.

13. Thank Your Child’s Teacher
Bake-It-Yourself offers a cupcake decorating class with Teacher’s Day in mind. Suitable for children around six or seven years old, this part-demo and theory and part-hands on will get your child working with rolled fondant. 14. Let the Kids Go Mad!

15. And… Get Your Child a Sibling
