Optimising the September 2013 School Holidays

The school year is progressing fast and we are approaching the end of term three. Make the most of the upcoming week-long break by letting your young ones broaden their horizons, learn new skills, and make new friends.

Nature Photography

The Nature Photographic Society is collaborating with National Parks Board and Singapore Botanic Gardens to organise a parent-and-child workshop. Each parent-child team, armed with at least a digital compact camera or a digital SLR, will capture nature through the child’s eyes. Bring along a tripod and macro lens too, if you have these.

Creative Culinaire

There are junior baking and cooking classes designed for children between five and 12 years old. Children will learn to bake breads, have fun with fondant and decoration, and make adorable cupcakes, as well as prepare, roll, and cook their own pasta dough and meatballs. After class, you can bring your child to enjoy a Kids Burger Set Meal ($8, with complimentary ice cream) at the adjoining Caffe Pralet.

Shadow Puppetry Workshop for Parent and Child

Part of the 8th Singapore International Storytelling Festival (SISF), this workshop on shadow puppetry will introduce participants to shadow puppets from Asia. They will also be taught how to make a simple shadow puppet from paper and to work in groups to create a story. Materials will be provided. The instructor is from Teatrong Mulat, a children’s theatre and shadow puppetry troupe in the Philippines.

RoboKnights

Robotics Connection together with Bedok Point, Centre for Robotics Learning and Secret Chamber, is holding this workshop for children aged seven to 12 years old. In total there are about 100 different robots that children can make. At the end of each session, a mini competition – for the fastest chariot, strongest catapult, and sumo knights – will be held. Participate in all sessions – there are four – to complete the Robotic Basic Level 1 course. Parents are welcome to form a team with their children.

Gardener’s Day Out

This year’s event offers talks and demos by experts and community gardeners, a gardening bazaar, and a host of activities for children. Apart from Garden Tours, children can learn about growing their own herbs and vegetables, as well as being a butterfly explorer. Younger children (from four years old) are welcome to join the nature story-telling and craft activities. Pre-registration is required.

Kids Vs Film Casting Call

Calling all kids (aged nine to 13 years) who have always wanted to get behind the scenes to direct, produce, edit and even star in their very own Discovery Channel-styled documentary. KIDS VS FILM is an epic filmmaking adventure that gives kids the rare opportunity to play the part of production crew and documentary hosts with one goal in mind – to create two-minute mini-documentaries for kids, by kids. Season one of KIDS VS FILM, hosted by Mohini Sule and Oli Pettigrew, featured kids of different nationalities ranging from Singaporean, Indian and Filipino to American-Columbian and Australian-British.
